Asia's dependence on Japan as a general trading partner has been diminishing over the past 10 years as China gained dominance. But the impact on China of the Japanese component shortage following the earthquake/tsunami did slow vehicle manufacturing. Nevertheless, despite temporary slowdowns in China, light vehicle sales are forecast to grow by 7% to 18.3 M units in 2 011, according to IHS Automotive. Imports by sea into the Chinese markets represent about 5% of light vehicle sales. Imported passenger cars sales increased by 39% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 261,000 units between January and April 2011. For the entire year, import passenger car sales could reach 854,000. BMW, Mercedes and Subaru lead the imports with market shares of 16%, 10% and 8% respectively.
