With fuel costs expected to rise by between 50% and 100% by the time the North American Emission Control Area begins in 2015, the obvious effect on fuel efficiency on vessel operators' bottom lines will become more critical to survival. For that reason Harry Rogers, operations manager at New Jersey-based ship management company Interocean American Shipping (IAS), is pushing beyond standard best management practices to eke out as much savings as possible. "We've extended best practices to begin looking at reducing our power consumption on board the ship - things like reducing the lighting in the holds when they don't have to be turned on," Rogers told Fairplay. "It's difficult to measure, but you know you're doing the right things." Because IAS manages ships that operate in the Arctic (for affiliate Totem Ocean Trailer Express) and the Caribbean (for affiliate Seastar), Rogers has seen fuel inefficiency occur in many forms.
