Los Angeles and Long Beach have recorded significant reductions - with the help of state regulations - in diesel particulate matter (DPM) and oxides of sulphur (SOx). Reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) will be the next challenge for San Pedro Bay. "NOx emissions are a huge problem here in the Los Angeles area because it's a precursor to smog," Port of Los Angeles assistant director of environmental affairs Christopher Patton told Fairplay. 'There are no statewide regulations for ocean-going vessels today that effectively get at NOx reductions." In the meantime, the ports are seeking to tackle the problem on their own through the San Pedro Bay Clean Air Action Plan.
