A couple of years ago, Greece's prime port, Piraeus, attracted a lot of publicity - but for all the wrong reasons. Incessant strikes by dockworker unions opposed to COSCO Pacific's takeover of Pier II at the port's container terminal damaged Piraeus' image worldwide - some feared irreparably. But in the two years since the end of the spat between the dockworkers and its administration, and despite recent industrial action caused by more port privatisation plans by the government, Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) has worked hard to raise its image, not only in regard to the services it offers shipowners and shippers, but also both ports and ship operators have taken this on board.
