Uncertainty surrounds financing of the Finnish line Viking's new cruise ferry in which a ceremonial hole was cut in steel plate at STX Finland's Turku yard recently. The 57,000gt vessel has attracted controversy because of Finnish state support through customer and shipyard grants that could fall foul of European Union regulations. The trans port ministry approved €28M ($37.6M) last December as an "environmental protection improvement" investment, which is permitted by Finnish law. An accompanying statement clarified that the money will be paid when the vessel is handed over and registered on the Finn ish list by 2013. STX Finland received €11.3M from the ministry of employ ment and the economy as "a shipbuilding innovation sub sidy", which the ministry said was permitted under a 2004 EU regulation. A condition is that at least 80% of the ship must wear the Made in Finland label.
