Outlook: The anomaly in the charter market worsened as short period rates for 3,500teu vessels fell further below levels for ships with half their teu intake. MSC and Wan Hai reportedly fixed older German 3,500teu units out of spot positions at only $6,500/day for 6-9 months. But, overall, the downward trend in period rates seems too have slowed, with the ConTex drifting a moderate 0.9% or 4 points week on week. Average charter earnings for boxship owners, adjusted for inflation, are back to the levels of the 2002 slump.
