The shortsea shipping industry may not yet have succeeded in wringing any concessions from regulators on the introduction of very low-sulphur fuel in the Baltic and North Seas from 2015, but the sector can at least take heart that by then exhaust gas scrub bers should be able to provide an abatement solution.rnSince the amendment of MAR POL Annex VI included abate ment in addition to low sulphur fuel as a means of compliance, sulphur scrubbers have been more ugly sister than Cinderella. Recent improvements in the systems' efficiency, lower costs and owner acceptance have made them a more attractive proposition.
