Poor design, a lack of after-sales service from manufacturers and an increase in counterfeit equipment topped the agenda for lifeboat safety discussions at the 53rd session of the IMO's ship design and equipment subcommittee (DE 53) last week. In his opening speech, IMO secretary-general Efthimios Mit-ropoulos, stressed that seafarer injuries and deaths during lifeboat launches - and especially during practice drills - were unacceptable.
