Trials are due to start shortly to test the feasibility of using biofuel in marine engines to reduce CO_2 emissions. The two-year project will explore how an auxiliary engine on the 6,930teu container ship Maersk Kalmar copes with a blend of biofuel and diesel. Additional fuel tanks have already been fitted to hold the biofuel.rnThe operator has set itself a goal of reducing CO_2 emissions from its container ships by 20% by 2017, compared with 2007 levels, and expects biofuel to help it meet that target. Another aim of the study is to assess the long-term storage properties of the fuel.
