Heavy fuel oil is being contaminated by a range of harmful substances that can seriously damage ships' main engines, fuel analysts have told Fairplay. While it is acknowledged that bunkering is vulnerable to bad practice because of the unsophisticated delivery system, Ram Vis, founder of fuel testing laboratory Viswa Labs, told delegates at the Petrospot conference in Singapore earlier this year that both contamination through operational error and adulteration by deliberate addition of undesirable substances are on the increase.
