An EU regulation entitling passengers to compensation and assistance in European waters has been agreed and is expected to enter into force by the end of 2012. It affects vessels carrying 12 or more passengers at sea or in inland waters over distances exceeding 500m and results from a compromise between the European Council and Parliament.rnShipping companies will become liable for delays, for which they will have to pay compensation, and will have to provide assistance to travellers with reduced mobility, in line with air and rail operators.
