Essar, the Indian conglomerate, is planning to split up its listed Essar Shipping, Ports and Logistics (ESPL) subsidiary. The group, led by CEO Prashant Ruia, plans to transfer its shipping, logistics and oil services businesses to a new company and retain the port operations. The reason for extracting the ports division from Essar's other operations is simple: the business has been very successful. On 12 August, ESPL management said the ports business had reached a size where it could stand alone.
