Optimising the interaction between a vessel's propeller and rudder can reduce fuel consumption and costs. Six months of trials of the Energopac integrated propeller and rudder combination from Waertsilae carried out with the Spliethoff Group have demonstrated savings of 4% power in design condition.rnThe Energopac includes a rudder bulb, mounted on a custom-designed full-spade flap rudder. The leading edge of the rudder is twisted, making for better alignment with the propeller's slipstream. This combination reduces frictional drag while maintaining course-keeping capabilities. Each Energopac installation is customised for the specific vessel.
