摘要

Establishing viable shortsea shipping trade corridors in the US is proving difficult, but, despite the impediments, there may be opportunities for both domestic and international carriers.rnLast month the US attempted to jump-start its 'Marine Highway' scheme - first established in 2008 and put into operation in April 2010 - by identifying 18 marine corridors, eight projects and six initiatives earmarked for further development.rnIn addition, the US Maritime Administration made $7M available so that the projects could compete for seed money to ascertain their viability.rn"Making better use of our rivers and coastal routes offers an intelligent way to relieve some of the biggest challenges we face in transportation - congestion on our roads, climate change, fossil fuel energy use and soaring road maintenance costs," US Transportation department secretary Ray LaHood said.
