The supply of modern bulk carrier sales candidates is failing to match demand as more buyers express an interest in returning to the S&P market. Despite this, buyers are willing to pay a premium over levels that have been reestablished since the freight market bottomed out early in December. Lunar New Year holidays across Asia are likely to affect the volume of transactions concluded in the coming week, but there are enough buyers and sellers elsewhere for activity to continue. The real interest about the start of the Year of the Ox is to what extent the freight markets might turn upwards after the holidays marking its arrival. Tentative signs of recovery in bulk carrier earnings may further encourage buyers to pay what sellers require and push prices upward. When calculating the cost of bulk carriers today, however, as well as the purchase price the buyers must consider the amount of working capital required to keep the vessel trading in a sub-break-even market.
