Rio tinto's decision to sell South American assets in Brazil and Argentina could have an impact on the region's maritime players. The company announced that it was divesting its potash assets in Argentina and Canada, and its Corumba iron ore mine and associated river transport activities, to Brazil's Vale for $1.6Bn. The Argentina project involves the $850M Potasio Rio Colorado development which includes a $170M port and storage facility at Bahia Blanca. A 50-year contract was signed last September to export up to 4M tonnes of processed potash through the facility, which has yet to be built. Sources at the Baht'a Blanca port authority told Fairplay they had received no official confirmation of the transaction.
