Intense violence is increasingly being used by Somali pirates during hijack attempts, Fairplay has learned. Pirates have become more violent to overcome improved self-protection by merchant ships and the increased response by the multi-nation military forces. Would-be hijackers have to seize control quickly otherwise military forces disrupt the attack.rnSo pirates have abandoned the 'spray and pray'way of firing AK-47s and have adopted military-style, more precise fire from the shoulder. They target small arms fire at the bridge to force officers to stop the ship more quickly than before. Pirates also aim rocket-propelled grenades into the accommodation block to start fires, forcing the master to divert manpower from anti-pirate defence to firefighting. Crews and armed guards have become violent in defence.They fire flares at, and drop burning planks onto, pirate skiffs in an attempt to ward off the attack.
