During a visit to Havana, the Captain was struck by the poor condition of some of its port facilities. Surely, he asked his Cuban shipping friends, port infrastructure was a suitable opportunity for some private investment, especially in view of Cuba's thawing relations with western capitalist countries?rnHis suggestion was met with a less than warm reception. "Since your credit crisis, wernare more sceptical about privatisation," one of them said. "At least we know where we are with state ownership".rnSo it looks as if even detente may not result in a facelift for Cuba's ageing fleet and 20th century port technology. And that may be welcome news to many of the island's tourists, who enjoy entering a timewarp when they emerge from Havana's airport.
