For much of last year, the planned merger of IHI Marine United and Universal Shipbuilding, two of Japan's largest shipbuilders, appeared to be a done deal.rnThe potential economies of scale on offer, together with the limited overlap in the respective yards' areas of product specialisation, provided what many observers felt was a compelling commercial case for the union. However, as the 1 April start of Japan's fiscal year approaches and after almost a year of detailed discussions about practical issues, no announcement has yetrnbeen made to confirm that the two companies have reached final agreement.rnPartly as a consequence of high steel costs, both IHIMU and Universal are now forecasting losses totalling ￥40Bn ($400M) for the current fiscal year and the companies are said to be having difficulties agreeing how to mitigate such losses as a merged entity.
