Period rates for geared 1,100teu Handy vessels remained steady last week despite activity levels coming down.rnAccording to the Hamburg Contex, it is the most stable of the major three size categories with its average rate index marked up twice in the past two weeks.rnThomas Rehder, chairman of the Hamburg Shipbrokers'Association, said in a presentation in Hamburg last week that demand for small Handy types has now apparently begun to recover.rnAs is usual after a downturn, the market begins to stabilise from the smaller sectors upwards, he said. Handy vessels are also benefiting from a reverse cascading effect as some carriers eject midsize ships due to reduced volumes.rnRehder said that one of his own midsize vessels dropped out of a charterparty negotiation because the operator opted for a smaller type.
