Norway considers the Philippines to be one of its most important partners in terms of bilateral relations in the maritime industry.rnThe number of Filipino seafarers onboard Norwegian-controlled vessels, which at one time reached 25,000, is the fruit of such relations. This employment record in the Norwegian fleet encouraged Norwegian companies to get involved in ensuring the quality of maritime education and the training of Filipino merchant marine officers. Through the effort of the NorwegianrnShipowners' Association (NSA), Manila now hosts one of the leading training centres for Filipino seafarers.rn"The practical knowledge is very important to us," NSA managing director Sturla Henriksen told Fairplay in a recent interview in Oslo. Training Filipinos is necessary as "it's not realistic to think there will be a base of Norwegian seafarers to cover the fleet," he added.
