Newcastle, Australia, is situated on its river of the same name, which forms a splendid port and a worthy rival to its namesake on the Tyne in England, the shipping accommodation being quite equal. The river has a delta, three mouths, of which two are dosed by a breakwater, leaving one deep channel and entrance, but it is a decidedly awkward one to make. On the left bank a bold small Gibraltar-like rock juts out, and on the right are rocky shoals, and with the heavy seas and winds so often prevailing it wants great care in making. Several wrecks lie on the right bank, one with masts still showing. An immense amount of work has been expended in dredging and land-reclaiming and quaying. By the use of the ballast discharged from the fleets of ships a vast extent of marshland has been reclaimed, and natural quays formed round extensive basins of water. Deep water berths up to 30ft run for several miles up the river. At Stockton opposite and Newcastle, the coal tips are erected on the quays, the plant and system of loading, quite up-to-date, afford-rning as rapid dispatch as can be obtained in Cardiff, Tyne, or Wear. A fair amount of wool and grain is shipped here, and the imports are increasing.
