Sentiment remains depressed as chartering activity slowed in the second half of May. Data from AXS Alphaliner and large brokers in London and Copenhagen suggests that the overall idle ship figure is unchanged at about 500 units rnHowever, the proportion of charter-owned tonnage within the unemployed fleet has gone up as carriers went to re-activate some of their own idle ships to cater for the summer cargo peak seasons. On the trans-Pacific alone, more than half a dozen services have been relaunched or significantly upgraded, according to AXS, despite a drop in annual contract freight rates of 20-50%.
