Thirty-one years after founding the hospital ship charity Mercy Ships, Don and Deyon Stephens were awarded the Variety Club International Humanitarian Award at the beginning of May. Their original idea was to equip a suitable ship as a hospital, fill it with volunteer crew and sail around the world offering free medical care to poor communities. Since then the charity has grown in scope and has increasingly focused on West Africa. Its programme now includes port assignments by government invitation, permanent land-based programmes in Sierra Leone and response teams to deliver short-term assistance.
