It is debatable whether Islamic finance really is a realistic alternative. It requires that an actual physical asset backs any deal, hence the attraction of shipping to Islamic financiers and why Islamic financiers avoided derivatives and other paper deals. Although the recession has hit the real estate sector hard, Islamic banks in the UAE are still profitable and able to tap the petrodollars of the rich Gulf states.
