Ferries with cargo capacity have been particularly badly-hit in the economic downturn, and nowhere more so than in Europe. Ironically however, these could well be among the first vessels to pull themselves out of the mire.rnRecent investments have focused on cargo capacity, and while that certainly didn't help matters when trade levels plummeted in 2008, it will be money well-spent from the end of this year and onwards, according to LRF Research.rnWhile the ships are expensive to operate and consume significant amounts of fuel, ferries still outperform both aviation and container ships on shorter routes. Moreover, a ferry's ability to transport passengers as well as vehicles give it a distinct advantage over ro-ro vessels.
