A major new port for the export of LNG is due to start operations at Balhaf, Yemen. The first cargo lifted from there will be one of 12 being carried from Yemen to either Korea, Europe or North America as part of a 6.7M tonnes annual delivery guarantee from the site developer Yemen LNG. Four ships have been built to serve under 20-year timecharters to fulfil that contract. It's a big deal that came with a big price tag - over $4Bn. Creation of Balhaf is the culmination of the Yemeni government's efforts, in partnership with the private sector, to develop the Marib gas field, which has 9.15Trn ft3 of proven reserves.
