The centenary of the first call of an inbound trans-Atlantic liner at Fishguard in southwest Wales falls on 30 August 2009. Cunard's famous Mauretania was the ship which, together with sister ship Lusitania, maintained the fastest service between Liverpool and New York.rnGreat Western Railway was the owner and developer of Fishguard. Through a local company, it had expensively developed the port in the years 1894-1906 to provide the eastern terminus of the shortest sea route to Ireland.rnFrom its founding in the 1830s, and guided by Isambard Kingdom Brunei, the GWR had looked westwards. This policy had briefly taken the GWR and its Bristolian shareholders into trans-Atlantic shipowning and, from 1872, into short-haul cross-Channel routes. Both the GWR and its rival London andrnSouth Western Railway had considerable success in promoting Plymouth as the first and last port for passenger ships routed through the English Channel.
