On 3 August 2009, an agreement was signed following lengthy negotiations between the economics ministry, bank association ABI and entrepreneur bodies, which allows small and medium-sized companies to defer payments on bank loans. Although this deal will not resolve the serious financial problems resulting from the global economic crisis, it certainly represents a breath of fresh air for many Italian companies suffering in the credit crunch, according to Giancarlo Casani, chairman of Ancanap, the national private shipyards association.
