It was good to hear encouraging news from South Africa, where representatives from ship-brokers' and agents' associations in 45 countries met earlier in the month to tackle a number of issues affecting vessel operations. The strength of the association was much enhanced before the gathering with the election to membership of the Chinese and Philippine associations. This meant FONASB A general- secretary Jon Williams could say with certainty that the organisation covers almost half the world's population and three-quarters of its GDP.
