After six years of wrangling, work on Melbourne's much-delayed channel dredging is finally expected to begin early next month. The Federal Court of Australia dismissed the anti-dredging Blue Wedges group's challenge of a federal environment minister's approval of the Melbourne scheme (Fairplay Daily News, 20 December). The project has often played like a vast environmental soap opera, with emotive arguments over the impact of dredging Port Phillip Bay and counter-claims that Melbourne will become an "economic backwater" without the deepening.
