Rising costs and intense competition from Shenzhen are choking the growth out of Hong Kong's port, where 2007 throughput figures make gloomy reading. The port's volume grew just 1.5% last year from 2006, with 23.9M teu crossing its wharves. As far as Hong Kong Container Terminal Operators'Association chairman Alan Lee is concerned, that is no growth at all."The only thing growing is double counting," Lee told Fairplay, referring to the growing percentage of transhipment cargo passing through HK's port that is counted twice.
