New regulations are due to affect small tankers this year, and Lloyd's Register has been exploring ways to satisfy the rules without losing too much cargo space. Speaking about this problem last week, Jonathan Morley, head of LR's MARPOL section, offered cost-effective ways to comply. A 3,000dwt oil tanker with double bottom and single sides, for example, can "place heavy oils in the centre tanks, and light oils or noxious liquid substances only in the wing tanks."
