Malaysia is trying to accelerate its transhipment goals with a deal between its showcase port PTP and the country's leading international shipping line, MISC. The accord's aim is twofold: to bolster the Johor port's connectivity with other ports and build PTP's box numbers. "MISC is a logistics solutions provider and for Malaysian shippers that means freeing up space for cargo and slots," Nazery Khalid, senior fellow at Malaysia's Maritime Institute, told Fairplay. More than just offering cargo opportunities, MISC, as a member of the Grand Alliance, will bring with it some of the biggest names in the shipping community.That membership, said Khalid, "introduces synergy and leverage on the alliance to create slots, cargo and connectivity". The move will create jobs and increase maritime traffic from the intra-regional trade run to the East/ West trade route.
