Of all the changes that Fairplay has charted in shipping since this magazine was launched 125 years ago this week, the container sector has evolved most rapidly - so rapidly, it seems, that some of the safeguards have been left behind. The International Chamber of Shipping is hoping to address this with a code of best practice by the end of the year. The work is in response to two casualties that highlight the problems of overweight containers and the concerns they cause for vessels and crews. These were the MSC Napoli and Annabella accidents. The ICS hopes that the code will enable container shipping to regulate itself and to influence legislation.
