Land was nearby but hidden in darkness. Yet still the ship sailed on. The crew were concerned but remained calm. Their belief was total: the vessel's all-seeing eyes would keep them clear of danger. Not the electronic eyes of radar, however, but the eyes painted on the vessel's bow. For this was 4,500 years ago. The eyes of the Egyptian freighter, in the mind of the crew at least, would guide them safely past unseen dangers and ward off fire and tempest. Seafarers have always been superstitious creatures; many still carry charms. Ever since man ventured onto the water, he has wisely mistrusted it and sought help to ward off danger.
