Most investments by Louis Dreyfus Armateurs are directed toward trade in India, but the owner remains preoccupied with takeover possibilities involving Britain and the Continent. A $320M investment by LDA during the next three years will largely pay for building self-propelled barges for the river transport of coal in India. LDA's core activity - transporter of dry bulks to Asian markets - has been improved with the opening of a new shipping office in Singapore. From there, LDA hopes to make a new plunge in the markets of India and Indonesia, where the company already tranships coal exports by using floating cranes and builds tugs, barges and floating cranes at its Perkasa Melati shipyard on Batam island. However, LDA has not lost sight of growth potentional in Europe, where it has sought to acquire rival ferry operator Sea France and AP M0ller Maersk's Norfolk Line. LDA's Britain/France movements on the ferry market have pushed it into the maritime limelight in France. In November, LDA will place Norman Voyager, a ferry being built at the Visentini yard, on the Portsmouth/Le Havre run, which is now served by Norman Spirit.
