The US economy will get worse before it gets better, so box lines should brace for weakness through 2009, economist Michael Andrews has warned. Andrews, chief economist for the Port Import Export Reporting Service, offered a gloomy prognosis in a presentation: GDP will grow by just 1.2% this year in the US. The deeper-than-expected housing recession will weigh consumer spending well into next year, he added, and the credit crunch "is far from over". PIERS predicted that US containerised imports will decline 2.5% in 2008, following a smaller dip last year. A return to the plus column is forecast for 2009, but at levels that pale in comparison with the torrid double-digit growth of just three years ago.
