Croatia's largest shipyard Brodosplit is banking on market diversification to counter the loss of government subsidies. A condition of Croatia's proposed entry into the European Union, as early as 2010, was giving up the subsidies. So the government handed its restructuring plan for its government-owned yards to EU officials last week. Brussels is scheduled to approve or reject the blueprint before EU accession talks with Zagreb in the second ha If of 2009. Many market watchers wonder how much of Croatia's financially troubled shipbuilding industry will be left as a result. Brodosplit's sales manager, Srecko Kurtovic, told reporters, including Fairplay's, on a media tour that competition from low-cost Asian yards means that the fight is on to maintain Brodosplit's position in the world market.
