The Greek ferry market may lose its hard-won freedom if operators do not rein back on raising the price of their services at will. Under the motto "free competition benefits the consumer", ferry operators had long pressed the government to abolish control on ferry fares. The fares control was in place for social reasons; to ensure that the island communities could travel to the mainland at affordable prices, but the government finally bowed to pressure in May 2006.
