T BOONE Pickens is a name to conjure with. More than 25 years ago, his Mesa Petroleum had grown into one of the largest independent oil companies in the world. So he should know something about that industry. He has predicted that oil will top $150 a barrel because there is not enough stock to meet demand. He also said producers were running out of oil, a theory that people are increasingly embracing. The Pickens prediction was issued just as oil futures for WTI pushed above $135 per barrel (see Tankers, p84) and Brent went above $130/bbl. Product prices are beginning to reflect this trend. Gasoline exceeds $4 per gallon (€0.67 per litre) in the US, and even more elsewhere. Jet fuel is also becoming more expensive, also poking past $4 per gallon.
