Capesizes stole the dry bulk limelight as the market reached new all-time highs in the run-up to a public holiday in both the UK and the US on 26 May. Still, sector analysts saw clear signs that the market might have peaked. A trip charter fixture was concluded last week at a hire rate surpassing $300,000 per day for the first time. An undisclosed charterer reportedly fixed the 2006-built China Steel Team (203,512dwt, for delivery Dunkirk, 28 May-5 June) for a trip via Brazil to China to load iron ore at a staggering $303,000 per day. The loading dates would give a mid-June arrival date in Brazil. This equates to about $124 per tonne for a standard 160,000-tonne stem, which looks extremely high compared with up to $108/tonneon a voyage basis.
