It's a sign of the strength of Hellenic shipping that five major international maritime organisations are headed by Greeks. International Maritime Organization secretary-general Efthimios Mitropoulos is joined by Spyros Polemis, president of the International Shipping Federation and chairman of the International Classification Society, and Philip Embiricos at BIMCO, while the chairmen of both Intercargo and Intertanko are Greeks: Nicky Papadakis and Nick Fistes, respectively. This has little to do with the size of the Greek fleet - although this remains impressive - or the estimated 250,000 people who work in the Greek maritime sector - which is staggering.
