As orders slow down globally, Maersk is taking the opportunity to renew its fleet. With its recent order at Hyundai HI for 18 container ships of 4,500teu, the company is embarking on a programme of fleet regeneration and renewal, increasing the capacity of its fleet. It is a large order and could be the start of a massive spending spree, but it is not necessarily a sign of an upturn in the global market. A source at a prominent shipbroker consulted by Fairplay gave his opinions on the order. He pointed out that the box ship market has been fairly healthy for the past five years. High fuel costs are increasing overheads significantly, however, and not all of the increase in bunker prices can be passed on by the liner operators to their shipper customers.
