Memories of the nightmare sinking of the Greek ferry Express Samina in September 2000 were revived last week when another ferry struck a rock in the eastern Aegean. The incidents showed striking similarities, and sparked new safety rules. But where 80 passengers were killed when Samina sank, there were no casualties on Theofilos. Both vessels struck a charted rock while approaching ports of call, when vigilance on the bridge ought to have been high.There were competent seafarers in both bridge teams, and most of them had long experience of repeating the same trip daily. Damage to the hulls was about the same in both vessels. Although the Theofilos incident has not yet been investigated, it is certain to be attributed to human error- as was the case with Samina. But Theofilos did not sink because its watertight compartments held, and it just listed three degrees. Chaos prevailed after the Samina impact, but the Theofilos crew conducted an orderly evacuation. No-one was even injured.
