摘要

Christopher Cockerell had a dream. His new kind of vehicle was not only fast but could travel equally happily over water or land. Hovercraft would revolutionise world transport. Somehow, this never quite happened. But still, the idea of air-cushion vehicles just won't go away. Cockerell began working on a ACV model in the mid-1950s. He said he first came up with the idea when he was thinking how to make a boat go faster by reducing the friction caused when it travels through the water. It wasn't an entirely new idea: using an air cushion to speed ships was considered as early as the 18th century. Sir John Thornycroft got as far as patenting an early design in the middle 1870s.
