Saudi Aramco is scraping the bottom of its barrels. In an effort to raise production, it has decided to rely for most of its planned 2008 increase of 850,000 barrels per day on three oil fields. The Khursaniyah field has been just ticking over since its discovery in the early 1950s. The main reason was that production of this sour crude was rather spasmodic. It peaked at around 200,000bpd in 1980, but has long been perceived as old and worn out. Amin Al Nasser, senior VP for exploration and production, is reported in the Oil and Gas Journal as having told an audience in Jeddah last week that the field will be brought back on stream by the end of this year. He said that Khursaniyah will be producing 500,000bpd by then. Twenty-five years ago, it could barely manage 100,000.
