摘要

The impact of invasive species carried in ballast water into the US Great Lakes is $200M a year and rising, according to a study released last week by the Center for Aquatic Conservation at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. And that amount only deals with the impact on the US side - not the Canadian side of the Lakes. "Considering that new invasive species are being discovered every year, and species already present are spreading, it is likely that the losses experienced in 2006 will increase in following years," said ecologist David Lodge, who wrote the report, which identifies 57 species that have been carried into the lakes since the St Lawrence Seaway connected them to the ocean in 1959.
