Dutch publisher Lanasta has announced the latest in a series of historical maritime photo-books. The new publication is Dutch Merchant Navy 1930-39 and covers the decade before the Second World War. Each of the photographs carries a short explanation but it is clearly the intention to convey the flavour of the pre-War era rather than go into a detailed history and analysis of Dutch shipbuilding and shipowning. Most of the photos are monochrome as expected, but a few colour plates give a strong impression of what it was like to travel as a cruise passenger in those days.
