Singapore is addressing the vexing issue of shortage of pilots, PSA Marine MD VSivarajan assured Fairplay last week. The agency is the sole provider of pilotage services. Sivajaran said steps were being taken to correct the shortfall. "Currently, 45 mariners are undergoing training by PSA Marine to be harbour pilots," he explained. Qualified Singaporeans and foreign nationals have been recruited for training. Further measures to address the shortage are to be implemented from 1 August. These had been scheduled to kick in on 1 July, but PSA Marine gave port users the additional time for compliance with the requirements of the revised procedures.
